NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) has become one of the world's most valuable companies on the back of strong demand for graphics processing units (GPUs). The company has also started shipping its own central processing units (CPUs), allowing cloud service providers to potentially replace CPUs from Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD.US) and Intel Corporation (INTC.US), bringing new competition to the AI server market.
NVIDIA on Tuesday released new details about its data center CPU "Vera", including specifications, benchmark tests and architectural information for potential customers to evaluate. Company representatives said Vera chips were delivered in June to customers including OpenAI, Anthropic and SpaceX.
NVIDIA is regarded as a key trendsetter in the information technology industry, but in the CPU market the company is once again acting as a challenger, vying with Intel and AMD, both of which maintain deep relationships with hyperscale cloud service providers and cloud giants.
